The voltage regulator bracket fits right up against the rear fender. Without some means of preventing metal-to-metal contact, the voltage regulator bracket will damage the rear fender. From the factory, Moto Guzzi used a couple of pieces of rubber trim to prevent metal to metal contact. These trim pieces seem to get lost. Here are a few alternatives:
- McMaster-Carr part number 8510K12 is a little bigger than original, but actually works very well.
- Trim-Lok Plastic and Rubber - look under the rubber edge trim section (I've not ordered from them).
- Split a piece of soft, small diameter rubber hose length-wise.
Thanks to Joe Tokarz for sending me this information via email. In Joe's own words and photos:
A short piece of 1⁄8 inch ID vacuum hose works very well to protect the fender from the bracket but it's difficult to make a straight cut down the length of soft tubing. If the hose moves, the cut usually ends up being a slow spiral.
Here's a simple solution. Lightly clamp the tubing in a vise and insert a nail or something similar to hold it steady while getting started. Use a sharp blade to make the cut. No need to cut all the way through. Use the nail or in my case a small diameter Philips to pry open the cut. It should separate cleanly.
Mount the tubing on the bracket flanges and trim off excess leaving a bit of overhang.
