Thanks to Joe Tokarz for sending me this information via email. In Joe's own words:
If your tail light is worn out give it a refurb and it will look and operate like new.
Clean the entire light. Remove the clear plastic window and use plastic polish to remove scratches and cloudiness. You may need to drill out the small rivets that hold the lens and replace them with small fasteners. Strip and paint the housing. If the socket and its wiring are in bad shape replace them. Resurface the reflector with aluminum foil for maximum light reflection.
Cut a slightly larger piece of heavy foil to fit over the reflector, shiny side out. Carefully push it in to fit the reflector shape. Trim the edge with a small razor blade knife but don't cut the socket hole yet. Remove the foil and lightly spray the back with adhesive. Place the foil on the reflector and smooth it out. Now cut out the hole.
Install the new 2 filament socket and new lens.
