Thanks to Sebastian Hocke for sending me the photos and description of how he repaired the worn pivot on his footboard rails. In Sebastian's own words:
The factory stud with the shaft and thread is all one piece and welded into the rail pipe. I cut the shaft right at the welding spot leaving an around 9 mm - 10 mm deep welded in massive stud within the pipe. From there I cut a 8 mm thread in with a 2 mm deep countersink.
I bought a hardened and polished 16h6 stud with 8 mm thread and glued a grade 10.9 threadened stud in with green Loctite. After that I also glued everything into the rail.
The new bearing surface is defenitely an upgrade against the (worn) factory one and I doubt I can loosen it without destoying it. Now I have to repaint the rail and press/ream a new bearing into the lever as well ;-)
