I took these photos while assemblying the front drum brake for my Moto Guzzi Ambassador2.
Here are the basic components.

You'll need flat washers and nuts for the fixed pivots.

The brake shoes are assembled in this orientation: A fixed pivot facing a rotating pivot on each end.

Here is Stephen Brenton's excellent brake shoe spreader tool in place. Please note the orientation of the springs. The open ends of the springs facing down/away from the wheel hub to avoid any risk of them spreading wide and coming into contact with the rotating wheel.

The pivots fit as shown. Note the large flat washers under the rotating pivot. Apply a light coating of grease both to the portion that fits between the brake shoes AND the shaft that fits through the rear brake plate.

The flat washers and nuts are secured in place on the fixed pivots. This photo INCORRECTLY shows flat washers on the rotating pivots. The flat washers are only placed on the fixed pivots.
